Denia

Once the Romans came here dedicating the town to Diana, the goddess of hunting. Under their dominion the port grew and became one of the most important harbours of the Spanish coastline opposite Italy. The exportation of raisins was the base for the ‘economic miracle’ the town went through. On a nearby little hill the visitor will find a Moorish castle. All documents about the historical origins are safely guarded in the fund of the Archaeological Museum, which is situated in the Governor’s Palace. Between the sacral buildings the Church of Christ’s Ascension from the 18th century will attract your attention. The interesting building from an architectural point of view houses altarpieces of the Renaissance and Baroque age, which are representative of their art form. The façade of the town hall shows furthermore testimonies of Denia’s history: it contains two stone tablets of the ancient Diana temple.
