Altea A solid city wall protected the characteristic whitewashed houses in ancient times. Fishermans district is located at the foot of the hill and is brightened by a nicely shaped beach promenade. The fishing port is an important issue in the local economy. At the most visited squares of the village artisans and painters mix with summer guests and local people, forming an attractive mixture of individuals of high vitality. When visiting Altea you should start from the highest point of the town. From the square in front of the church called Nuestra Señora del Consuelo, a captivating monument with cupolas made of white and blue tiles, youll have an excellent view of the surrounding countryside, being of superb beauty. Benidorm is a modern leisure and holiday resort with the best beaches in Europe. A little hill called Canfali rises in the middle of the bay of Benidorm and divides this coastal section into two splendid beaches of fine sand. A 5 km long walk along both beaches, called Levante and Poniente, allows the visitor to enjoy the fascinating scenery offered by the Mediterranean Sea in this part of the coast. The eastern section, the Levante beach, was the first to be opened for tourism. Terraces and small bars invite the visitor to take an aperitif or to spend all afternoon there. Denia Once the Romans came here dedicating the town to Diana, the goddess of hunting. Under their dominion the port grew and became one of the most important harbours of the Spanish coastline opposite Italy. The exportation of raisins was the base for the economic miracle the town went through. On a nearby little hill the visitor will find a Moorish castle. All documents about the historical origins are safely guarded in the fund of the Archaeological Museum, which is situated in the Governors Palace. Between the sacral buildings the Church of Christs Ascension from the 18th century will attract your attention. The interesting building from an architectural point of view houses altarpieces of the Renaissance and Baroque age, which are representative of their art form. The façade of the town hall shows furthermore testimonies of Denias history: it contains two stone tablets of the ancient Diana temple. back to the top |

Javea Following the curvy street along the coast, one comes to Jávea with its coastline urbanisation and the beautifulcentre of the town in the inland protected by the Montgó. The port area with numerous holiday accommodations is located nearby and tourist life mainly goes on in this area. The town expanded inside the bay around the church fortress St. Bartholomew, meant to be a protection against the attacks of the Moorish pirates. Until the last century Jáveas authorities rejected growth towards the port, which would have been the natural way. The church is a unique example of gothic architecture during the period of Isabella, the catholic queen. It consists of a nave and various chapels built between buttresses. The Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology located in the historical centre of the town is worth a visit, giving you the opportunity to know more about the history of this area. back to the top |

Moraira Bays with superb beaches, impressive vantage points, from where you have a panoramic view over the coastline of the Costa Blanca, a picturesque old fishing port, the modern shopping centre at Teulada, combined with spectacular surroundings are making both villages so popular with people from other countries. In the port area of Moraira you find a Nautical Club and one of the largest sailing schools on the coast. Teulada offers to sports fans all kind of facilities. San Juan In summertime San Juan offers more action than Alicante. Walking through the market towards the sea, enjoying the cafeterias, some of them even offer live flamenco music. Visiting one of San Juans street pubs is a must. Dont be deterred by the crowds of young people standing in the front section: in the back the ambiance is far more relaxed. There are other pubs, which offer pop music, videos, swimming pools, gambling machines and billiard tables. Test one of the elegant pubs as well, youll find a mixed-age clientele. Santa Pola This little town is an important port, fishermean go as far as the Canary Islands. This is why the town is famous for seafood. The extraction of salt out of the salt lakes on both sides of the national street towards the south is another important branch of the local economy. Up to now, Santa Pola is not dominated by tourism, even though the urbanisations of holiday homes at the cliff Cabo de Santa Pola in the north keep growing. The wide beaches of fine sand El Pintet and La Marina, surrounded by pine tree covered dunes, the Dunas de Elche, are located in the south. Villajoyosa The small centre of the village with multicoloured house facades, situated on the plateau of a rock high over the sea is most attractive. The church has been integrated into the town fortification. Along the coastline a promenade leads to the fishing port (yacht port). There are two types of beaches: either coarse-grained sand or pebble beach. Towards the south follows a cliff-lined coastal section. At the present time the town has nearly 20.000 inhabitants, but still keeps the image of being a charming little village full of life. back to the top |
